Disagree with the 'all viral creators are sellouts' take

I met a girl named Maya at a coffee shop in Brooklyn who went viral for her cat paintings back in 2022. She told me the brand deals let her quit her waitressing job and actually spend more time on art, not less. Has anyone else met one of these "sellouts" and heard their side?

Hell, I'd sell out too if it meant people bought MY concrete sculptures.

Whoa, hold on a second. I gotta call something out here. Concrete sculptures aren't exactly something people just line up to buy like hotcakes, so "selling out" with them is kind of a misnomer. In my experience, most folks doing concrete work are scraping by on custom jobs for parks or rich people's yards, not exactly cashing in. The term "sell out" usually means ditching your artistic integrity for a big paycheck, but with concrete, you're lucky if you're even breaking even after materials and labor. Your mileage may vary, but I've seen plenty of talented sculptors struggle to move a single piece for months. Take this with a grain of salt, but I think you're picturing a market that's way more forgiving than it really is.

@the_robin hits it - selling out assumes anyone's buying in the first place.
