I rewatched that 2012 keyboard cat style video before and after the hype and one thing changed everything
I showed my little cousin the original Keyboard Cat video from 2007 last month and she laughed, then I showed her a dead meme from 2012 that got 40 million views and she just stared at the screen. The difference was that the old one still works on its own even if you never saw it before, while the newer one only made sense if you were there for the jokes around it. So which is it: do viral things fall apart because they were never good, or because the thing that made them funny got left behind in the moment?
