My homemade hot sauce got 2 million views on TikTok in 2021 and I just poured the last 3 bottles down the drain
So back in 2021 I posted this dumb clip of me pouring my fermented habanero sauce over eggs and it blew up overnight. I mean like 2 million views and my phone would not stop buzzing for a week straight. A guy from a local farmers market in Sacramento even called me asking if I wanted a booth. For like 4 months I was answering DMs about my pepper mash ratio and people kept saying I should sell it. Then the views just dried up. I kept making batches anyway, bottling them, labeling them by hand at my kitchen table. My fridge has had the same 3 bottles in the back since spring of 2022. Last night I opened one, smelled it, and it had that weird fizzy tang. I dumped all 3 down the sink and just stood there. Has anyone else made a thing that got popular once and then you kept making it for an audience that already left?

That "fizzy tang" line got me because I know that smell exactly. I brewed beer for about a year after a buddy told me my first batch was amazing, and I mean I went all in. Built a kegerator out of a mini fridge, printed labels with my dog's face on them, the whole thing. Problem was I only ever had like four friends who actually drank it, so I had kegs sitting in my garage getting warm and flat while I kept brewing anyway. Ended up dumping probably 15 gallons one weekend and my neighbor asked if everything was ok because he heard me swearing. The urge to keep making the thing after the crowd walks off is real.
