Rant: I picked the cheap camera gimbal over the rental, big mistake

Back in June I had a weekend shoot for a local band's video, nothing huge. I could rent a proper DJI gimbal for $75 or grab a no name one off Amazon for $110 that had 4.5 stars. Figured owning it was smarter. Three takes in, the motor started whining and it drifted like crazy. I ended up holding the camera steady with my hands for most of the shots anyway. The rental would have been smoother and I'd have no junk taking up shelf space. Anyone else get burned by buying budget gear that a rental would've handled? What do you do when the cheaper option lets you down?
