That whole "Instagram cat saved from a shelter" story turned out to be staged
Saw this thread on a rescue forum where someone dug into the photos of that cat that went viral for being rescued from a hoarder house. Turns out the same cat appeared in 3 different "rescue" posts with completely different backstories over 2 years. The metadata on the pics showed they were all taken in the same apartment. Guess the hype was fake from the start. Has anyone else caught a viral animal story that didn't add up?

People digging into meta data is how a lot of these fall apart. I've seen a few "senior dog saved from euthanasia" stories where the vet records didn't match up either. Getting fooled once makes you question every heartwarming post you scroll past.

So does that mean we need to start watermarking our sad puppy stories with blockchain timestamps now, @ward.anna? Just another part of the internet's favorite game of "spot the fake feels.

Yeah that bit about "every heartwarming post" is so true. A friend of mine actually tried posting about her cat's recovery from some surgery and some random person online dug up old photos and called her a liar. Turns out the cat really did have the surgery but she'd posted the wrong photo by accident lmao. Now she's super paranoid about sharing anything cute her pets do cause someone might start checking vet bills or something.
