The week I stopped forcing my old gaming videos on new friends

I used to send anyone who mentioned video games my old Machinima montages from 2012, thinking they'd care about these clips I grinded for hours. Then last fall I ran into a kid at my store who was talking about a speedrunner I'd never heard of, and I realized my hype was dead for everyone but me. Now I just ask what they're playing instead of dumping my nostalgia on them. Has anyone else had to kill their own hype about something that mattered to them way more than it did to anyone else?

The three people I sent my old Quake 3 frag reel to didn't even finish watching it, so I feel you on the reality check there. You're probably overthinking it a bit though. It sounds like you just grew up and realized the world doesn't revolve around your highlight reel, which is pretty normal.

Does sending that frag reel feel like a test that nobody passed, @brooke_taylor44? I'm more curious what you thought they'd get out of watching it. Like, were you hoping they'd relive that era with you, or were you trying to prove something to yourself?

Yeah I've been noticing this same thing with vinyl records lately. Like people my age will buy a turntable and start recommending obscure pressings to anyone who mentions music, but most people just want to stream whatever new album dropped. It reminds me of how we used to trade mix CDs in high school thinking we were curating someone's taste, but really we were just trying to get them to like the same stuff we liked. That whole impulse to convert people to your niche seems to fade when you realize everyone has their own rabbit holes they're already deep in.
