Tried that viral sourdough starter trend from 2020 last month

Kept feeding it for 3 weeks and it just turned into a smelly mess with no bubbles. Did anyone else's starter actually work or was that whole thing just for show?

@ryan793 that "hooch" thing is actually the liquid layer, not bubbles.

That "feet smell" is just fermentation, not a sign of failure though.

Gotta say, the smelly mess thing is pretty normal for the first week or so. Idk if you were expecting it to look bubbly right away but that "hooch" layer on top is actually a good sign it's hungry, not dead. Most people give up way too early, you probably just needed to keep feeding it for another couple weeks with a bit more consistency. My starter took almost a month before it finally doubled, and it smelled like feet for most of that time.
