Had a local illustrator compliment my AI-assisted character design today

I've been messing around with AI tools for concept art on my D&D campaign, and I always feel a bit weird about it since I can't draw worth a darn. Today I showed a quick character sheet I made to a buddy who does freelance illustration, and she actually said the color palette and silhouette were interesting. She did point out the hands were a mess and the armor didn't make practical sense, which was totally fair. It was nice to hear that even with AI help, I'm learning something about composition and design. Has anyone else had a real artist give them genuine feedback on AI-assisted work, good or bad?

Real artists using AI to speed up their own workflows is way more common than people admit, so getting feedback from one means they see you're learning the fundamentals instead of just typing a prompt.

Right, "learning the fundamentals" is the whole deal.

Lean into that hard. Like if you're learning color theory, don't just read about it. Actually do the exercises. Make a color wheel by hand with paint or even just colored pencils. Then mess around in Photoshop or whatever tool you use and try to match those combos. Same with composition. Pull up old master paintings and trace the major shapes. Figure out why a diagonal line through a landscape makes it feel more dynamic than a straight one. That kind of hands on stuff sticks way better than watching a 20 minute youtube vid about it.
