Just realized something after visiting the art fair in Portland

I went to the Portland Art Fair last weekend and saw a booth selling prints made with AI. The artist running it was super open about it, saying they typed in prompts for hours to get each image. I used to think that was fine, but watching a real painter at the next booth mix colors by hand for one piece changed my mind. Seeing them both side by side made the AI stuff feel kinda empty. Has anyone else had a moment like that where seeing the work in person flipped your view?

What about the time it takes to learn the skill? The painter spent years learning to mix colors, but the AI user just typed words. Does that difference in effort change what the art is worth?

Yeah my buddy had that happen at a craft market. He saw a guy making a wooden bowl on a lathe for like an hour, then saw a booth selling laser-cut coasters. Totally changed how he sees that stuff now.

Man, that hits close to home. I once spent a whole weekend trying to carve a spoon from a block of wood. It looked like a sad, twisted paddle by the end. Then I saw perfect ones at a store for ten bucks. Felt like all that time and effort just made my weird spoon more special to me, even if it's useless. The struggle is part of the story, you know?
