My chat with a painter in Kyoto changed my view on AI art

We sat in a quiet cafe and he explained how AI tools feel like theft to him. That honest talk helped me see the artist's side, which is a win for me.

My friend spent years learning digital painting. She developed a really unique style over time. Then someone used an AI tool to replicate her work almost exactly. She said it felt like a part of her was taken. All that practice and personal touch meant nothing to a machine. That’s when I got why artists call it theft.

Hold on, AI can just copy an artist's unique style? That's downright creepy.

Picture art becoming more about the idea in your head than the skill in your hands. Someone could type a fancy prompt and make an image that took a real artist years to learn how to paint. That changes what we even think art is for. It starts to feel less about human touch and more about who has the best description. My worry is we make art itself feel cheap and soulless.

Speaking of human touch, my stick figures look like a toddler drew them, lmao.
