My neighbor the illustrator changed my mind about AI art in 5 minutes flat

I was over at my neighbor Dave's place last Saturday. He's been doing book illustrations for like 15 years and he showed me his portfolio. Then he pulled up one of those AI image generators and tried to make something in his style. It took him 30 tries to get something that even looked close and he said the AI still messed up the hand anatomy and the lighting was all wrong. He told me it's not that AI can't make decent pictures, it's that people think it's gonna replace the skill of knowing why something looks good. Has anyone else had a conversation with a working artist that made you rethink your whole stance on this?

30 tries to get it close and it still messed up the hand anatomy, that's the part most people miss. The AI doesn't know WHY a hand looks weird, it just guesses based on other pictures it's seen.

My cat once spent 20 minutes trying to catch her own tail, spinning in circles until she fell over, and she still didn't get why it wouldn't stop moving. Kind of like how the AI keeps missing the hand thing, just keeps trying the same approach without really understanding. At least my cat looked cute doing it though.

Maybe the cat understood fine and just enjoyed the dizzy ride.
