My neighbor's kid just won a school art contest with a picture made by an AI

I saw the flyer on their fridge yesterday. The kid typed 'space cat with laser eyes' into a website and printed it out. The school gave him a ribbon and a $25 gift card. It feels wrong that a program gets credit for what a real kid could have drawn. How do we even explain this to young artists? Has anyone else seen AI art winning actual prizes meant for people?
