Picked the local artist over the AI tool for a logo today

I needed a quick logo for my side project and almost used DALL-E 3 to save $150. Instead I paid a guy I found on Craigslist in Portland $75. He hand drew it on his tablet and it came out way better than anything I could have prompted. Has anyone else made that choice and regretted or celebrated it?

Wait, you found a guy on Craigslist in Portland who hand draws logos on his tablet for $75?? That's wild to me, I can't believe that worked out so well! I would have been so nervous about getting ripped off or ending up with something terrible. Honestly, I'm kinda impressed you took that chance and it paid off huge. Good for you for supporting a real artist instead of feeding the AI machine, that logo probably has way more soul than anything DALL-E could spit out.

Oh, the "more soul" part really hit home for me. I think that's exactly what's missing from so much of the cookie cutter stuff floating around now. You're right, it is a gamble, but I figured if someone is willing to put in the time on a tablet for that price, they probably actually care about what they make. And honestly, getting a genuine hand drawn piece, even if it's pixel based, just feels more like a real collaboration than typing a prompt into a box.

Is it really that different though? I feel like AI tools are just using data from real artists anyway, so whether you type a prompt or pay a guy on Craigslist you're still getting something built off someone else's work. At the end of the day, if the logo looks good and does the job, does it matter how it got made?
