Found a 1970s alarm panel still working in an old Boston warehouse
I was doing a system upgrade for a client in the North End last week and found an original Ademco 4120 panel from the 70s still wired in and active. The thing is older than I am and it was still monitoring three zones. I pulled the manual online and it said the expected service life was 15 years. Anyone else run into a piece of gear that just refused to die?

Reminds me of finding a payphone still working in a subway station last year. It feels like some old tech just gets forgotten in the background and quietly does its job forever. We're so used to things breaking or getting replaced, but those old boxes were built like tanks. It's a cool little piece of history still on duty.

Seriously, what did you even do with it? Drop a quarter in just to see if the dial tone was still there? I'm half convinced those things are powered by ghosts and stubbornness at this point. Did you call anyone, or was it just a weird museum piece check?

So you found it still monitoring three zones... what were they hooked up to? Like, were they still basic door contacts, or something weird like an old safe or a freight elevator cutoff? I'm just picturing the wiring in a place that old, probably cloth wrapped and everything.
