The part nobody talks about is voltage drop over distance, not device count. Eight devices on a 100 foot run of 22 gauge hits different than eight devices 15 feet from the can. I've seen panels choke on four heads when the wire was undersized and the run was long. So a separate supply is really just you buying headroom for resistance you can't see. Count is a decent shortcut but wire gauge and run length are what actually kill you.
