That one panel swap in a Phoenix attic that took 11 hours because of a single mud dauber nest
Last Tuesday I got called out to a house in Glendale to swap an old 8 zone panel for a new one, should have been a clean 3 hour job. I crawl up into the attic around 9am and everything looks normal until I pop the cover off the old can and see a mud dauber nest the size of my fist glued right over the terminal strip. Fine, I figure, I'll chip it out carefully and move on. That thing was not coming out without a fight, and every time I scraped at it, dried mud rained down into the wire channel and I had to vacuum it out before I could even see the zones. Then I realize the previous guy had zip tied every single wire into one giant bundle going into the wall, so I'm up there with a headlamp sweating through my shirt trying to trace which pair goes to the back slider. Around 4pm I finally get it wired, power it up, and zone 3 shows fault because a magnet on the back door got bumped loose at some point during my circus act. By the time I tested everything and climbed down it was 8pm and the homeowner asked why I was there so long. Has anyone else had a panel that got sabotaged by bugs or a lazy installer, and what do you keep in the van for that mess?
