The homeowner who thought a doorbell camera was enough

Last fall I had a call in Arlington Heights for a basic system install, and the guy kept telling me he didn't need sensors on the back slider because his Ring camera covered it. I asked him what happens if someone just smashes the glass and grabs a laptop in 40 seconds, he said he'd see it on his phone later. I walked him through the footage delay and how the alarm triggers instantly with a contact, and he finally let me put one on. Has anyone else run into customers who think a camera is a full replacement for actual detection?

Is it just me or is everyone these days convinced that watching something happen is the same as stopping it? It's like people think a camera is some magic shield instead of just a witness. I see it everywhere, not just with security systems, people leave their bikes unlocked by a window with a video cam pointed at it. Cameras are great for finding out what happened after the fact, but they never stopped a single break in. The whole point of an alarm is to make the bad guy leave before he even gets your stuff.
