Warning: I was running my wire runs all wrong for years

I was on a job in Tampa last month, and a fire inspector pointed out my wire was too close to a hot water pipe. He said, 'That's a code violation, and the heat will break down the jacket over time.' I had been running wires near heat sources for a decade without thinking. It was a real wake-up call about following the exact code distances. Has anyone else had an inspector catch something basic you were missing?

Honestly, I read a whole article about that exact thing last year. It was talking about how heat from pipes or even ductwork can make the wire insulation brittle way faster than normal. Tbh it never crossed my mind before that, I just figured if it wasn't touching the pipe it was fine. The article said it's one of those common oversights because the problem takes years to show up. Makes you wonder what else we're all doing on autopilot that's actually wrong.

My first year as an apprentice, I ran a thermostat wire right alongside a furnace flue pipe. My boss called it a "future crispy critter." Like lilyhayes said, you just don't think about the slow bake. I've since found wires I ran near recessed lights that felt like they were made of dry spaghetti. It's one of those things you never notice until someone points it out, and then you see the potential for trouble everywhere.

That's a good point from @joel_chen31, but I've seen plenty of old work where wires ran near heat for decades with no issues. Sometimes the code feels like it's solving a problem that barely exists, you know?
