Warning: saw a panel at a hotel in Tulsa with zone wires twisted together and taped, no wire nuts at all
Stayed at a small hotel in Tulsa last month for a family thing and the desk clerk let me peek in the utility closet when I mentioned my trade. Every zone wire in that 20 year old panel was just twisted, folded over, and wrapped in electrical tape, no wire nuts, no terminal strip, nothing. I counted 14 zones done that way and two of the tapes had already slipped off. Has anyone else run into this on a service call, and do you fix it zone by zone or just push for a full panel swap?
Man, that is rough and scary at the same time, and I feel for whoever has to deal with it next. Twisted and taped splices with no nuts will heat up and fail, and two tapes already slipping means it is not a matter of if but when. I would push hard for a full panel swap since 14 bad zones is past patching, and fixing them one by one just kicks the problem down the road.
