A customer in my shop argued that appliance manuals are a waste of time
He insisted he could diagnose any fridge by sound alone, right before I found a shredded belt on his unit that the manual's troubleshooting chart flagged. How many of you actually use the manufacturer guides for complex repairs?

Guess his ears missed the chapter on shredded belts.

Oh man, his whole head must have skipped that entire section.

Read a study last year about how people who skip manuals cause 30% more callbacks for simple fixes. The writer called it "pride-based repair" which feels spot on. That troubleshooting chart exists because someone already paid to learn about shredded belts the hard way.

Manuals can be hit or miss though. Some of them are way too technical and skip the basic stuff you actually need to know. Plus if you've fixed a dozen fridges already you probably have a good ear for common problems without reading a booklet.
