Magnet trick for finding broken wires in fridge evaporator fans - does it actually hold up?

Oh man, I tried that magnet trick once and ended up chasing a ghost for three hours before realizing my fridge was just unplugged. It worked okay for finding the break in the evaporator fan wire though, at least until I dropped the magnet down the drain pan and had to fish it out with a coat hanger. Honestly, I'd say it's hit or miss, but when it works it's way better than trying to trace the whole wire by hand.

@kellygrant you dropped the magnet down the drain pan? That's honestly impressive in a terrible way. I'd be so mad trying to fish that thing out with a coat hanger.

Tie a piece of string to the magnet next time. That way if it drops you just pull it back up.
