Paid $80 for a whirlybird roof vent install. Leaked like a sieve after 3 months.

I thought I was being smart hiring a handyman to put in a whirlybird over my laundry room. Got the quote, $80 labor plus materials, seemed fair. He was in and out in 2 hours, said it was good. Then we got a heavy rain last week and I found water running down the wall behind the dryer. Went up in the attic and saw daylight around the flashing. He didn't even use proper sealant just shoved some caulk in there. Now I get to pay a roofer double that to pull it and redo it right. Has anyone else had bad luck with handyman roof work for dryer vents or am I just picking the wrong guys?

Did the guy at least show you any kind of license or insurance? I learned the hard way that handymen love to say they "do roofing" but they don't know the first thing about flashing. You gotta pull the vent boot, slide new flashing under the shingle above it, and seal it with a quality urethane caulk, not that cheap silicone stuff he probably grabbed at the dollar store. Next time, call a roofer straight up, or at least a handyman who specializes in metal work. Paying someone a fair rate upfront beats paying double to fix their botched job later.

Maybe your soffit vents are blocked and the whirlybird just wasn't moving air.

Man I feel your pain on this one. $80 handyman special strikes again lol. I once hired a guy to patch a small hole in my roof for like $60 and he used roofing cement that turned into a crumbly mess after one summer. Ended up paying a proper roofer $400 to fix the damage and do it right. At least your guy used caulk instead of duct tape or something, small victories right? Live and learn I guess, now I just bite the bullet and hire licensed guys for anything that involves the roof.
