PSA: A customer's old fridge taught me to always check the defrost timer first

Got a call last week for a fridge in a 1970s house here in Tacoma. Lady said it was warm. She pointed at the freezer and said 'It's been making this weird clicking noise for two days'. I pulled it out, found the defrost timer behind the kickplate. Manually advanced it with a flathead. Heard the heater click on. Saved her the cost of a new unit right there. Anyone else run into that specific click before the full defrost fails?

My buddy in Spokane had a tenant report that exact click. He found the timer was just stuck on defrost.

My old fridge in my first apartment did that same click for a month straight. I was convinced it was a ghost trying to communicate. Turns out it was just a twenty dollar part throwing a tantrum. I spent more on earplugs than the fix would have cost.

People make that click sound out to be a huge deal, but sometimes it's just a stuck part like @rowan_reed68 mentioned. It doesn't always mean the whole system is about to fail. A simple fix is often all you need.
