Rant: I fixed 1,000 machines before I realized I was tracking the wrong stat
I keep a small notebook in my van and mark a tally for each job I finish, and I hit 1,000 repairs done on Tuesday. Sitting in the driveway with a cold coffee, it hit me that almost 700 of those were the same four or five problems, mostly on washers and fridges. I was proud of the number at first, then kind of annoyed, because it means most of my week is the same three fixes over and over. Now I want to know what you all count, do you track repairs, callbacks, or average time per job? I think my callback rate matters way more than the tally in the notebook.
700 out of 1,000 being the same handful of fixes really rings true, and that cold coffee moment sounds about right. I used to keep a tally too, back when I ran service calls around the Tri-Cities, and after a while I noticed half my tickets were drain pumps and door switches on the same two Whirlpool models. It's a weird letdown when the number stops feeling like proof of anything and starts feeling like a rut. Callback rate is the one that actually tells you if you're good, not busy. A high tally with a lot of repeat visits just means you're fast at getting called back.
