Rant: The moment I stopped believing fridge compressors are always the issue

I was at a job in Austin last Tuesday, a 5 year old Samsung fridge not cooling, and I spent an hour checking the compressor and starter relay. Turned out it was just a clogged evaporator fan from ice buildup, I cleared it and it ran fine. Anyone else ever waste time on the wrong part because you jumped to the hardest fix first?

Yeah, that "compressor is usually the problem" thinking had me too. You changed my mind.

Nah, the compressor is usually the problem on those Samsungs.

Has anyone actually checked the drain line on these things? I'm not saying you're wrong about the compressor, but half the time I see a Samsung acting up it's just a frozen drain line causing water to back up and trip the sensors. The compressor will cut off as a safety thing, not because it's broken. People rush to blame the big parts without looking at the simple stuff first. A wet vac on the drain and letting it thaw for a day might save you a huge repair bill.
