Showerthought: A customer's old dryer taught me about checking the vent first

I was fixing a dryer that wouldn't heat up last week, and the owner mentioned his power bill went up $30 a month over the winter. I almost just swapped the heating element, but then I pulled the unit out and found the vent hose crushed flat behind it. Clearing that fixed the heat issue and probably his bill too. Now I always pull the machine out first to look, even if the symptom points inside. Has anyone else caught a simple vent problem that looked like a big repair?

My buddy Rick called me last year, swearing his dryer's thermal fuse was shot again. He'd already replaced it twice. I went over and found about six feet of solid lint packed into the wall duct behind the dryer, like a dense gray sock. The machine was basically suffocating.

It's wild how many problems are just hidden buildup.

That "dense gray sock" description is perfect. Reminds me of the time I pulled a dead mouse nest, complete with acorns, out of a dryer vent on a cabin rental. The tenant thought the whole appliance was fried.
