Warning: I used a cheap multimeter for a year before it cost me a job

I was using a $25 generic multimeter from a big box store for basic continuity checks. Last week, I was troubleshooting a Samsung dryer that wouldn't heat, and it gave me a false reading on the heating element. I wasted an hour before I borrowed a Fluke 117 from the guy working next door. The Fluke showed the correct resistance immediately, and I found the real issue was the thermal fuse. Has anyone else had a tool fail at the worst time? What's your go-to reliable meter for appliance work?

That exact thing happened with my old meter on a fridge compressor. You start doubting everything you know. Ended up grabbing a basic Klein Tools meter on sale, and it hasn't lied to me yet. It just feels solid, you know? Why do the cheap ones always seem to die when you're already having a bad day?
