Am I the only one who felt weird hitting 500 removals and realizing the stump grinder has done more work than my climbing gear
Crossed 500 removals on my log sheet this week and did the math on what actually did the cutting. Turns out the grinder and chipper handled most of it while my saddle sits in the truck getting dusty. Anybody else notice their career quietly turning into machine operation while they weren't looking?
That line about the saddle sitting in the truck getting dusty hit me, because my buddy ran a crew for years and one day he pulled his climbing gear out and found mouse nests in the rope bag. He said it was the strangest feeling, like the job he signed up for had packed up and left without telling him. Thing is, he still climbed the tricky ones nobody wanted to rig from the ground, just not every day like before. Machines took the grunt work, but they never learned to read a leaner or a widow maker. So yeah, the numbers say grinder and chipper, but the stuff that actually needs a climber is still the stuff that pays the bills. He sold the spare saddle last spring and kept one good one, said that felt about right.
