Borer damage way worse after a mild winter, check your maples now

I pulled a dead branch off a client's sugar maple yesterday in Lancaster and found galleries packed with larvae. The mild winter let emerald ash borer and other borers survive way better than I expected, the local extension office put out a bulletin saying emergence counts are up 3x this spring. I've already lost two trees that looked fine last fall, just drooping leaves this month. Has anyone else noticed more borer activity in their area after the warm season, or am I just unlucky this year?

Gotta admit, I thought I was the only one finding dead branches everywhere. Found three of my own maples with that same droopy look last week, and sure enough, the bark peeled right off with borers crawling underneath. My wife says I've got a lucky touch with trees, meaning they usually die on me. Mild winter probably made things worse, but I'm just hoping my bad luck didn't rub off on your client's yard.
