My chipper ate a fence post and I had to rebuild the feed wheel

Last Tuesday a bad pickup job left a buried chain link post in the pile, shredded the feed wheel teeth before I heard the grind. Spent 6 hours swapping the drum and tensioner in the yard at 40 degrees, glad I had a spare set from a parts auction. Has anyone else had a hidden metal surprise cost them a morning, or do you magnet-sweep every pile first?

Did you at least find the post before it did more damage than the feed wheel, or was it mangled beyond recognition? I ask because I had a similar thing happen with a rental chipper once, and the metal piece shot out sideways, nearly took out my truck window. A magnet sweep helps on top of the pile, but buried stuff like that chain link post is a whole different animal. What did you use to find the rest of the metal after you pulled the drum, or are you just hoping nothing else was hiding in there? Seems like a 40 degree day would make you real thorough about checking for leftovers before you put it all back together.
