My old foreman told me to stop pruning my maples in spring, took me 4 seasons to admit he was right
Back when I worked a crew outside Albany my foreman Ray kept saying to hold off on the soft maples until late summer, and I figured he was just being old school so I kept cutting in March. Three springs in a row those trees bled like crazy and threw a mess of water sprouts, and the one year I waited until August they closed up clean with way less regrowth. Ray retired two summers ago and I never told him he was right, so what's your cutoff for maples in your area, do you go by sap flow or just watch the buds?
