Serious question: was the $350 tree support system worth it or just hype?

I dropped $350 on a dynamic cabling system for a big old maple in my yard last spring, and so far it's holding up great through storms. But my buddy in Ohio swears by static bracing that cost him half that, says the flexible stuff is a gimmick for homeowners. The tree has a pretty serious split, and I'm worried the cabling is just masking the real problem instead of fixing it. Has anyone else tried these newer cabling setups and regretted the cost, or do you think they're the real deal?

Holding up through storms is a good sign, but that split worries me too. The flexible cabling is designed for live trees that still move in the wind, but if the split is really serious, you might just be buying time. Have you had an arborist check the overall health of the maple since the install? Sometimes a dynamic system needs annual adjustments as the tree grows, and missing those can make the whole setup fail when you least expect it.

Yeah but I gotta push back on the annual adjustment thing a bit... most of these dynamic cabling systems are pretty set it and forget it once the tree matures past a certain point. I've seen plenty of installations that hold for years without yearly tweaks as long as the initial install is done right with the right tension. The bigger issue here is that split could be a structural failure no matter how good the cabling is. If the crack is already running deep into the trunk or a major branch union then no amount of flexible steel is going to stop it from going all the way. I'd be more worried about the tree's own ability to compartmentalize that wound than if the cables are still tight enough...
