Shoutout to the old-school rope guys who taught me how to throw a line properly

Comparing a 3-strand line I fought with for years to a modern arborist throw line is night and day, but honestly that old rope taught me better technique in a week than any new gear did in a month and I'm curious how many of you still keep a cheap hank around for practice?

Buddy of mine got into throwing lines last year and refused to buy anything but a beat-up three strand from a hardware store. He spent three weekends getting it stuck in trees, nearly taking out a porch light, and one time it wrapped around his own leg so bad he had to cut it free. After that he broke down and got a real throw line, but I swear he could hit a coffee can from fifty feet with that old rope by the end of week two. That cheap stuff forces you to respect each throw, you know?

Did he ever get good enough with the cheap rope that he could intentionally drop it on a target from a certain height? I've heard those rough three strands can actually give you better feedback on release, letting you feel every little twist before it even leaves your hand. Curious if he ended up sticking with that style for everyday use or if he just went back to the better line like everyone else.

@wright.leo nailed it, cheap rope humbles you quick, don't it?
