Spent 6 hours trying to chip a stump before I finally just called in a grinder.
The rental place said a 3 day mini excavator would save me money, but after 8 hours of fighting roots I drove back and dropped $475 on a stump grinder that finished in 20 minutes.

Man I used to be the same way. Thought a mini excavator was the obvious choice for my backyard maple stump, but I ended up hitting a giant root network that took me all weekend. @shanec61 I feel your pain on those chains snapping, I broke three before I gave up. Now I just go straight for the grinder and swallow the cost, it's way less headache.

Fighting roots for 8 hours" is basically my whole life philosophy at this point. I did the exact same thing with a big oak stump last summer. Rented the mini excavator thinking I was being smart. Spent two days digging and snapping chains before I finally caved and paid for a grinder. Twenty minutes and it was done. Sometimes you just have to admit when you're wrong and hand over the cash.
