that 2x4 trick worked way better than the break bar I usually use

The break bar always felt like overkill for me too, but that 2x4 gives you way more control without fighting the tool. Plus you can wedge it in spots where a bar just won't fit, which is half the battle when a branch grabs. Once you start carrying a short chunk in the truck, you'll find a dozen other uses for it before the day's over.
