Unpopular opinion: I thought the 'chase the deadwood' advice for oaks was overblown, then I pruned 40 of them in Madison
Three years ago I figured removing every dead branch was just extra billable hours, but after watching an ice storm snap 6 big limbs off the trees I skipped, I pulled out the pole saw and did all 40 over two weeks. Anybody else changed their mind on deadwooding after a bad storm?
Man, I learned that lesson the hard way too. After a nasty windstorm took out half a maple in my yard, I started cutting back dead wood every fall instead of waiting for nature to do it for me. Those dead branches are basically a weak spot just waiting to fail when ice or wind hits.
