Broke a 3,000 year old replica pot in my buddy's garage and finally got why archaeologists dig so slow
My friend Dave got one of those museum replica kits last month and asked me to help him unbox it in his garage in Reno. I picked up the replica of a Bronze Age pot, the handle snapped right off, and it hit the concrete before either of us could grab it. Turns out the real thing was pieced together from like 40 fragments found in Turkey in the 1950s, and every shard mattered because the break patterns tell you how it was used. So when I see a dig photo where they're brushing dirt off one tiny piece with a toothpick, now I get it, that piece is the whole story. Does anyone here actually work on reconstructions, and how do you deal with the fear of dropping something?
