Field school dig in Utah changed how I see pot shards forever
Last summer I spent 3 weeks on a survey crew near Moab and we found a dense cluster of broken pottery that looked like someone dropped a load of dishes. My first thought was that it was a trash heap, but the lead archaeologist said no, it was probably a ceremonial deposit based on the way the pieces were nested and the lack of animal bones around. That got me arguing with a grad student who thought it was just a cooking fail, and we went back and forth for an hour. So my question is, do you trust context clues over the obvious answer when a site feels off, or do you stick with the simplest explanation until proven otherwise?
