Found a Roman coin in a field near Bath and now the local museum wants it, do I hand it over or keep it?
Was out with my detector two weeks ago on plowed land near Bath and pulled up a silver denarius about 4 inches down, my first real Roman find in 3 years of searching. The local museum got word of it and now they want it for their collection, but I paid for the permit and the gas and the whole thing. Is it right to hand over a find like that for free, or should people who actually put in the legwork get to keep what they dig up?

My only Roman find in 3 years of detecting was a rusty nail that turned out to be from a fence. Legally though, treasure rules in the UK mean you probably have to report it, so maybe talk to a solicitor before you tell the museum anything.
