My professor told me to focus on the north side of the dig site in Crete.
I spent a week on the south side finding nothing but pottery shards. Moved to the north like he said and found a complete Minoan seal stone on day two. It had a bull-leaping scene carved into it. Anyone else have a tip from a mentor that paid off big?

Ever think old school methods were useless?

Seriously, who thinks that? My grandpa's tide chart and a good compass found more stuff than my buddy's fancy GPS last summer.

My granddad used to swear by his paper tide tables and a manual compass. He'd get bent out of shape if anyone called GPS a substitute, said it was like a crutch that weakens your sense of direction. But I think calling it "old school methods were useless" is maybe a bit harsh. A lot of that older gear just took more patience, not that it was useless.

Read a blog post about a guy who ignored his dive master about checking under a specific coral shelf. Missed a whole Spanish wreck.
