The new find at the Roman fort site near Hadrian's Wall is being called a 'barracks' but I think that's wrong.

I saw the report from the dig last month and everyone is saying the long stone building is for soldiers. But the layout is wrong for sleeping quarters. It has three clear sections with different floor types, which matches a storage plan from a text found in York. If we call it a barracks now, future work might miss the real use. Has anyone else looked at the room divisions in the site photos?

Yeah the three floor types thing is key. That York text lines up way too well for it to be a barracks.

The three sections you mentioned... are they the flagged stone, clay, and gravel floors? I haven't seen the York text. Does it specify what kind of goods each floor type was meant to store?

Oh for real! The York text totally says flagged stone was for dry goods, clay for liquids, gravel for perishables.

That three floor types thing reminds me of this old farm cellar I saw once, totally set up the same way.
