Vent: Comparing the excavation methods at Pompeii vs Herculaneum really shows how much we've improved

Honestly I was reading about the digs at both sites and it's wild how different the approaches were. At Pompeii they used brute force and actually destroyed a lot of context - like the plaster casts are cool but they missed so much detail. Compare that to Herculaneum where they're using micro-excavation with dental tools in that 2000 year old sludge, pulling out perfect carbonized furniture. Has anyone else noticed how the older digs just bulldozed through stuff we'd kill to have now?

Weird how they just plowed through Pompeii like that, right?

Plowed through Pompeii like that" gets at something bigger though. They probably figured the old ruins were already dug up enough and nobody would notice since tourists already walk all over the place. Plus Italy has so much ancient stuff buried everywhere that they just treat it like dirt you gotta push aside to build a parking lot or whatever.

Isnt that just how people treat history though, like its in the way of whatever they want to do right now?
