Warning: I almost walked past the one sherd that made sense of a whole pit
Two summers back at a dig near Cortez, a volunteer named Hank kept saying the plain gray piece in my tray was the important one, and I blew him off for 3 days. Turns out that rim shape dated the whole feature to around 1100 CE, and he just grinned and said the pretty ones get all the attention. Anyone else had a field partner call the boring find before you did?
Did you ever have that one person on a dig who just has a nose for the plain stuff? My field school buddy picked up a dull brown body sherd I had tossed in the discard pile, and it turned out to be a trade piece from 200 miles away. The flashy painted ones are nice for photos, but the boring bits are the ones that actually tell you something.
