Had a total data wipe scare last Tuesday because I didn't verify my cloud backup was actually running.

I was in my home office when my main drive failed, and the automated backup I'd set up 6 months ago had been silently failing the whole time. Has anyone else had a backup system fail without any warning, and what do you use now to double-check it?

Is it really that big a deal? I just copy my photos to a USB stick sometimes.

Yeah but my friend lost everything last year... he was like you @murray.robert, just using a USB stick for his vacation photos. The thing just died one day, no warning. All those pictures of his kid's first trip to the beach, gone for good. He was crushed. It's not about the stick breaking, it's about having no backup when it does. Now he uses a cloud service and an external hard drive, so there's always a second copy somewhere.

Honestly that part about the kid's first trip to the beach really hits home. I read this article once that said if a memory only exists in one place, it basically doesn't exist. It sounds harsh but it's true. Your friend's story is exactly why. Tbh I started backing things up after my own scare with a laptop crash. It's just not worth the heartbreak.
