Paid $75 for a 'password security audit' and got a list of obvious tips
I hired this online service last month that promised to find weak spots in my accounts, but all they sent back was stuff like 'use different passwords' which I already knew. Has anyone else tried one of these audit tools and actually found something useful, or is it all just common sense dressed up?
The bigger issue is that a lot of these services just run your email through a data breach checker and call it an "audit." Like, I could've told you my old AOL account from 2008 got leaked without paying 75 bucks for it. What actually helped me was setting up a password manager that flags reused passwords across sites, because that's where the real danger is. One leaked site turns into ten hacked accounts when you use the same login everywhere. So yeah, the tips sound obvious, but the tools that actually do something are the ones that check your specific accounts against known leaks and reused patterns. Paying for generic advice is the scam part, not the idea itself.
