Last month a retired plumber at the Kern County Fair showed me how to tighten a compression nut by hand and it stopped dripping after 3 years of annoyance. Has anyone else had a random stranger solve a problem you'd been overthinking for months?

Gotta disagree here. That old guy probably just got lucky or it wasn't actually fixed. Hand tightening a compression nut without a wrench sounds like a temporary fix at best. I'd be checking it again in a week.

Oh man, this totally hits on something I've been noticing more and more. We get so caught up in overcomplicating stuff with the proper tool or the right way to do things that we forget the simple fixes that actually work. Like, I spent two months trying to fix a squeaky door hinge with WD-40 and graphite powder and all kinds of sprays, then my neighbor just came over, tightened the screws on the hinge plate with a butter knife from his pocket, and it was dead silent. It's like we're trained to think everything needs a professional or a specialized gadget when half the time the solution is right in front of us if we'd just back up and look at it different. That old plumber probably saved you a hundred bucks and an hour of frustration just by showing you the basic trick that works.
