Three years ago I couldn't stand my dentist. Now I actually look forward to going.

I had the same dentist for like 15 years. Dr. Miller in Springfield. She was fine but every visit felt like a lecture about flossing. I switched to a new practice in 2022 because my insurance changed. First time I went in, the hygienist didn't scold me once. She just said "let's get you clean" and that was it. The whole vibe is completely different. They actually explain what they're doing instead of making you feel dumb. Has anyone else had a dentist switch that totally changed your view on checkups?

Wait, your hygienist said "let's get you clean" and didn't spend the whole time listing what you're doing wrong? That's wild, I thought every dentist had that script memorized. Sounds like a completely different world from the old school places that make you feel like you're failing a test every time you open your mouth.

Actually your experience is pretty common with newer practices. But "let's get you clean" is still kind of a lecture just without the guilt trip. My old dentist used to say stuff like "we need to work on your brushing technique" and it made me feel like a kid being scolded. The new one just says "everything looks fine" and that's it. The biggest difference I noticed is they don't make small talk while your mouth is full of tools. That alone made visits way less stressful.

Yeah that no small talk while your mouth is full thing is a game changer. I feel like it's part of a bigger thing where people are just trying to make everyday stuff less awkward, like how some cashiers now just scan your stuff and say "have a good one" instead of forcing a whole conversation. @walker.julia you're right that it makes a huge difference in how stressed you feel.
