Appreciation post: That guy who told me to try stacking my lunar shots in RegiStax instead of DSS
Been fighting with blurry moon photos for about 8 months now. I tried every tutorial on DeepSkyStacker I could find but my stacks always came out soft. Finally a random commenter on a forum said to give RegiStax a shot for lunar work since it handles surface detail better. First try with 200 frames from my last session and the craters popped like I never saw before. Has anyone else found a specific stacking tool that just clicks for one type of object over another?

Bro, just take a better picture and stop overthinking the software.

Agreed, it took me way too long to figure this out too. Honestly, I used to take hundreds of photos hoping one would be decent enough to edit into something good. What finally worked for me was learning to slow down and actually look at the lighting BEFORE I snapped the picture. Like, I started paying attention to where the sun was hitting and tried to frame stuff with clean backgrounds. Makes a huge difference, now I spend maybe 5 minutes in an editor instead of 45.

You know what @felixlane, I used to be the exact opposite. I spent HOURS messing with color grading and sharpening sliders trying to fix bad photos. But after reading your post, it finally clicked for me. A crappy picture will ALWAYS look crappy no matter how much you tweak it in software. Getting the lighting right and composing the shot well first is just SO much more important. I wish someone had told me this years ago, I wasted so much time on editing tricks that never really worked. Now I just focus on taking a solid photo to start with and the editing is just a tiny touch up.
