Finally stacked 40 frames of the Orion Nebula in my driveway and the core stopped looking like a white blob
I've been shooting Orion from my back patio in Boise for about 3 months and every stack came out with this blown out white center. Last night I cut my subs down to 15 seconds instead of 45 and stacked 40 of them in DeepSkyStacker, then stretched the histogram way less than usual. The Trapezium stars actually separated this time and I could see the dark lane cutting through the middle. I also shot 20 dark frames at the same temp, which I had been skipping because I thought it didn't matter much. What's everyone using for their stretch curve on bright core objects, or do you just take two sets of exposures and blend them?
That dark lane is usually the giveaway that you finally beat the core, not the star colors. Try stacking just 10 of your 45 second subs and blending that in as a separate layer for the outer dust instead of chasing one magic curve.
