Gave the $2,500 telescope a shot, my $400 one beat it in 3 nights
Last month I borrowed my buddy's fancy astrophotography rig, the one with the computerized mount and all that. I figured my cheap refractor was holding me back, so I spent three nights trying to match his setup. Turns out his auto-guiding kept drifting and the software was a nightmare to align. My old scope with a manual star tracker gave me sharper shots of the Andromeda galaxy with zero fuss. The difference was the skill needed, not the gear price tag. Has anyone else found that the expensive kit just adds more problems than it fixes?

My first imaging rig cost me about as much as a nice dinner out, and I spent a full month just getting the polar alignment close enough to not make star trails look like little comets. Then a friend loaned me a mount that cost more than my car, and guess what, it had a learning curve the size of Mount Everest. I finally got one decent frame out of it, only to realize I'd forgotten to flip the camera sensor and the whole thing was upside down. So yeah, I feel your pain. I'm convinced half the battle is just knowing your own gear's quirks, not how many zeros are on the receipt. My wallet and my sanity both prefer the cheap stuff.
